In July 2013, a court ruled that Topshop could not sell a t-shirt
bearing Rihanna’s image, and today, Britain’s Court of Appeal upheld the
decision.
In 2013, Topshop began selling a sleeveless t-shirt bearing an image of Rihanna during her Talk That Talk era.
Although the idea thrilled her fans, Topshop had not actually
acquired permission from the superstar to use and profit from her image.
The original judge ruled that the unauthorized use of Rihanna’s image
constituted a loss of control over her repute in the fashion industry
and that fans were likely to believe that she had authorized the image
when she, in fact, had not.
Today, 3 judges agreed.
Go, Rihanna!
