Justin Bieber Grabs First No. 1 in Australia with ‘What Do You Mean’

Justin Bieber has notched his first ever No. 1 on Australia’s singles chart with “What Do You Mean” (Def Jam/Universal).

The Canadian pop singer leads the new ARIA Singles Chart with his comeback single, the first lifted from his forthcoming studio album. Until now, Bieber’s best effort Down Under was a No. 3 which he landed in May 2010 with “Baby.”

It’s Bieber’s first appearance in Australia’s top 10 as a lead artists since ”Beauty And A Beat” reached No. 9 in December 2012, though he did hit No. 3 in April of this year as the featured artist on the Jack U single, “Where Are U Now.” Bieber last week announced he’ll visit Australia later in the month for a brief promo trip.

“What Do You Mean” holds off competition from R. City feat. Adam Levine’s “Locked Away” (RCA/Sony), while the top five is rounded out by Nelly feat. Jeremih’s “The Fix” (Sony), Taylor Swift’s “Wildest Dreams” (Big Machine/Universal)) and The Weeknd’s “Can’t Feel My Face” (Universal). Vance Joy’s gold-certified “Fire and the Flood” (Liberation/Universal) has reached a new peak of No. 6. The track is lifted from the Melbourne artist’s debut full-length album, Dream Your Life Away, which is newly-minted with platinum certification.

Another first-timer leads the national albums survey, The Weeknd’s Beauty Behind The Madness. It’s a huge gain for the Canadian artist whose first album Kiss Land peaked at No. 30 in September 2013. Beauty Behind The Madness leads an all-new top three on the ARIA Albums Chart, ahead of Halsey’s Badlands (Capitol/EMI) and Foals’ What Went Down (Warner Music). A pair of former No. 1s round-out the top 5: Dr. Dre’s Compton (Universal) and Taylor Swift’s 1989.
