Rude 50 Rupee note featuring the Queen’s head sells at auction for 120 times its value
A banknote from the Seychelles with the word ‘sex’ hidden in palm trees behind the Queen’s head has sold at auction for more than £300.
The 50 Rupee note issued between 1968 and 1973, which is only worth about £2.50, went under the hammer at an auction house in Dorset.
Secretly hidden in the trees behind the monarch’s face is the word sex – which can be read clearly if the note is turned on its side.
Auctioneer Timothy Medhurst, from Duke’s Auctioneers, said it is not known who designed the message into the note, but it could have been done by pro-independence printers.
Another note in the same series reads ‘scum’ he said. The Seychelles became independent from Britain in 1976.

The note was only predicted to sell for £200, but reached a whopping £336 when the hammer finally went down.
Ahead of the sale, Mr Medhurst said: ‘This is a very collectible item for obvious reasons.
‘Amazingly the added message wasn’t noticed – or was perhaps never mentioned – until after it stopped being printed.’
The note was part of the auction house’s October sale and was sold alongside other notes, coins and medals.
