Yesterday, the tallest Jesus statue in Africa was unveiled at the St. Aloysius Catholic Parish, Abajah in Imo state. The monument was commissioned by businessman and CEO of Premier Petroleum Limited, Obinna Onuoha, who stated that he had the dream in 1997 to build it.
The statue, which was unveiled by the Bishop of Orlu Catholic Diocese, Most Rev. Augustine Ukwuoma, is 8.5 metres (28 ft) tall and was carved out of white marble by a Chinese company.
Chief Obinna Onuoha also financed the construction of the 2, 000 seating capacity parish church at St. Aloysius in 2012 and the statue was used to celebrate the Golden Jubilee wedding anniversary of the parents of the businessman, Chief Geoffrey and Lolo Justina Onuoha.
“Asking why I constructed this statue is like asking how do I came to this world, I am a Christian and a Catholic and Jesus statue represents my faith(sic),” Obinna stated. “I believe we are here on earth for different purposes and each person moves with his/her instincts, and I was motivated to do this to build up the faith of this community.”
The statue is similar to popular tourist attraction, the ‘Christ the Redeemer’ statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
