The Taraba state government has confirmed an outbreak of the deadly Lassa fever in the state, adding that it is making efforts to contain the outbreak.
The state’s commissioner for health, Dr Innocent Vakkai on Monday said one person has been confirmed dead, while two others are being observed. Vakkai added that their blood samples have been taken to the Irrua Specialists’ Hospital in Edo State for further confirmation.
The Taraba state ministry of information has called on members of the public not to panic, as the state government has responded swiftly to the outbreak.
Lassa fever outbreak occurred in Taraba State in February 2012, causing the death of 10 people including a doctor and two nurses who attended to the patients.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), “Lassa fever is an acute viral haemorrhagic illness of 1-4 weeks duration.” The illness which is common in West Africa is caused by a Lassa virus which is transmitted to humans via contact with food or household items contaminated with rodent urine or faeces.
