Floyd Mayweather Jr. has ruled out a possible return to ring action
because he’s already assured of “seven figures for the rest of his
life.”
The retired pound-for-pound king, who ended a flawless career with a
customary points’ victory over no-hoper Andre Berto in Las Vegas last
September, earned over $800m in his 19-year career.
There have been rumours of a possible rematch with his archrival Manny Pacquiao, whom he beat in the so-called ‘fight of the century’ last May, but the 38-year-old says there’s no truth in them.
“As of right now I’m not focused on me, I’m focussed on the young
fighters under the Mayweather Promotions banner, and trying to help
those young fighters to be pay-per-view stars,” Mayweather told Talksport.
“I’m not thinking about who I could fight or who I could come out
of retirement for, I just want to get back into the sport in a
different way. I’ve been fighting my whole life and as a
professional I competed at the highest level for 20 years, so it’s time
for me to let the young guys take over.
“I will make seven figures a month for the rest of my life. I’ve
made some very smart investments and I’m living very comfortably, my
children are going to school and will be going to college soon, and
that’s what is most important to me right now…I’m just blessed way
beyond belief.”
However, given his lavish lifestyle, the question many are asking is: How long before the money runs out?
Maybe then we’ll have him in the ring again.
