2016 will be one second longer and here is why

On the last day of the year, one extra second will be added to the already long ASF year.

The final minute of December 31, 2016 will have the phenomenon called ‘Leap Second’.

A leap second is added to the time in order for atomic clocks to align with the Earth’s rotation.

What this means is, rather than 2016 ending on 23:59:59 this year, it will end on 23:59:60.

And no, this isn’t made up stuff. The most recent leap second took place in June of 2015.

Sometimes an extra second is needed in consecutive years, like from 1992 through 1995.

But there have also been long stretches of time in which no adjustment was needed, like from 1999 until the end of 2005.

So, what are you going to do with the extra second?
