President Donald Trump reportedly told the widow of a Green Beret who died in Niger that the soldier “knew what he signed up for” during a phone call on Tuesday.
The widow of Army Sgt. La David Johnson received the five-minute call from Trump one day after he falsely claimed that previous presidents had not called the families of fallen soldiers, according to Miami-Dade’s Local 10 News.
The soldier’s congressional representative — Frederica Wilson, D-Florida — reiterated to the network that Trump told Myeshia Johnson “he knew what he signed up for …but when it happens it hurts anyway.”
“Yes, he said it,” Wilson told the station. “It’s so insensitive. He should have not have said that. He shouldn’t have said it.”
Myeshia is pregnant with the couple’s third child.
The soldier died along with three other Green Berets when they were ambushed by an ISIS-affiliated group.
Johnson participated in a mentorship program that Wilson founded in 1993, the station said.
