The purchases were made through a sales agreement signed on Aug. 1 with several financial institutions, allowing Microstrategy to sell up to $2 billion in shares. By Sept. 12, 2024, the company had raised approximately $1.11 billion by selling 8,048,449 shares. Microstrategy has heavily relied on equity sales to fund its bitcoin acquisitions, and these sales continued as part of its strategy to accumulate more digital assets.

“As of September 12, 2024, the Company, together with its subsidiaries, held an aggregate of approximately 244,800 bitcoins,” the company’s filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) disclosed.

Microstrategy also highlighted its BTC Yield as a performance indicator. This metric showed a 4.4% yield from July 1 to Sept. 12, and a 17.0% yield for the year-to-date. The BTC Yield measures the ratio of bitcoin holdings to shares outstanding, assessing the effectiveness of its strategy to increase shareholder value through bitcoin purchases. However, the company acknowledged that the BTC Yield has limitations, including not considering liabilities and potential debt refinancing.
