Cristiano Ronaldo Sets World Cup Qualifying Record at Age 40
Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has added another milestone to his illustrious career, becoming the top goalscorer in FIFA World Cup qualifying history at the age of 40.
Ronaldo achieved the feat on Tuesday night during Portugal’s 2026 World Cup qualifier against Hungary, netting his 40th and 41st qualifying goals. This saw him surpass Carlos Ruiz of Guatemala, who previously held the record with 39 goals scored between 1998 and 2016.
Ronaldo’s Historic Brace Against Hungary
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner leveled the score for Portugal in the 22nd minute, slotting home from a Nelson Semedo assist. He struck again just before halftime, finishing off a brilliant pass from Nuno Mendes to give Portugal a 2–1 lead at the break.
Portugal appeared on course to secure their qualification for next summer’s World Cup in the United States, Mexico, and Canada, but Dominik Szoboszlai’s stoppage-time equalizer forced a draw — delaying Portugal’s official qualification.
A Record-Breaking Career Continues
Already the world’s all-time leading international goalscorer with 143 goals, Ronaldo continues to rewrite football history. His latest record reinforces his reputation as one of the most consistent and prolific players ever to grace the game.
At 40 years old, Ronaldo has now set his sights on appearing in his sixth FIFA World Cup, a feat unmatched by any European outfield player.
“Every goal, every record is special — but what matters most is helping my country qualify,” Ronaldo said after the match. “We keep fighting until the end.”
