FG Launches Next Moonshot Initiative, Opens Application Portal for N50 Million Student Venture Capital Grant

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially unveiled the Student Venture Capital Grant (S-VCG), a landmark programme designed to fund and accelerate student-led innovations capable of transforming the nation’s economic future. The application portal for the initiative is now open, according to an announcement by the Federal Ministry of Education on November 17, 2025.

The Student Venture Capital Grant (S-VCG) forms a key component of the Renewed Hope Agenda and is positioned to support the next generation of Nigerian innovators, inventors, and entrepreneurs emerging from the country’s universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education.

Speaking at the launch, the Minister of Education, Chief Dr. Tunji Alausa FAMedS, CON, emphasized the strategic importance of the programme. He noted that the President has challenged the education sector to “find the next Moonshot” within Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
“We are not just looking for projects—we are looking for future Nigerian unicorns rooted in our campuses. This is an equity-free seed investment in Nigeria’s future,” he said.

Up to N50 Million Equity-Free Funding for Student Innovators

At the core of the initiative is a powerful mandate: to fuel student-led innovation that directly addresses national or global challenges with clear potential for commercial success. The scheme awards up to N50 million in equity-free funding to student founders developing solutions within STEMM disciplines—Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medical Sciences.

Beneficiaries will also gain access to a robust innovation support system that includes:

  • Intensive incubation programmes
  • Expert mentorship from industry leaders
  • Full access to tools, platforms, and resources required to develop and scale their startups

This ecosystem is designed to ensure that funded projects go beyond concept stage and evolve into scalable, market-ready ventures.

Google Partnership to Power Innovation and Evaluation

To strengthen the programme’s global competitiveness, the Ministry of Education announced a strategic partnership with Google. Through this collaboration, Google’s Gemini AI technology will power intelligent “evaluation agents” embedded within the application platform, ensuring fair, fast, and data-driven assessment of submissions.

Additionally, every applicant who successfully submits an innovation proposal will receive a one-year free Google Gemini Pro license plus premium training resources to enhance their technical and entrepreneurial skills.

According to the Ministry, the partnership ensures Nigerian students begin their innovation journey with “the best tools in the world,” creating a strong pipeline from idea to market dominance.

Application Portal Now Open to All Nigerian Tertiary Students

The Federal Government is encouraging all eligible students in accredited tertiary institutions to apply. Interested applicants can access the portal at:

Students are advised to submit proposals that demonstrate:

  • Strong scalability potential
  • Clear market relevance
  • Ability to solve significant national or global problems

The initiative is expected to vastly strengthen Nigeria’s innovation ecosystem by empowering student innovators with both funding and world-class digital tools.
