Full Breakdown of Nigerian Ambassadors’ Salaries and Allowances
A well-known television broadcaster, Oseni Rufai, has disclosed the monthly earnings of Nigerian ambassadors. His revelation follows President Bola Tinubu’s submission of a new list of ambassadorial nominees to the National Assembly on Saturday.
Tinubu forwarded 32 additional nominees to the Senate for screening, after previously submitting an initial list of three candidates.
Among the new nominees are former INEC Chairman Mahmood Yakubu, Anambra-born Barrister Nkechi Linda Ufochukwu, political commentator Reno Omokri, and former Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, along with other prominent figures.
According to Rufai, the salary structure for Nigerian ambassadors—classified as senior Foreign Service Officers within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs—is determined by the Consolidated Diplomatic, Consular and Foreign Service Cadre Salary Structure (CONPSS). Ambassadors typically occupy the highest ranks (Grade Level 17 or its equivalent) and receive additional benefits when assigned to foreign missions.
Using data drawn from government budget documents, salary indexes, and reports on foreign service expenditure, Rufai explained that while the basic salary of an ambassador is relatively modest when compared to international standards, it is significantly boosted by extensive allowances.
He noted that exact earnings differ based on the ambassador’s duty location, professional experience, and exchange-rate fluctuations. (As of November 2025, $1 USD is equivalent to about ₦1,650.)
Rufai stated that Nigerian ambassadors earn a monthly basic salary of roughly ₦800,000 to ₦1,200,000, which translates to $485–$727. These figures are based on the upper levels of the CONPSS structure.
Entry-level foreign service officers earn between ₦300,000 and ₦500,000, but ambassadors—being at the peak of their career—receive the highest rate.
This amounts to an annual basic salary of ₦9.6 million to ₦14.4 million (approximately $5,818–$8,727). Rufai added that these figures align with the pay scale for top-tier public officers on Grade Level 17, adjusted for inflation and the 2025 minimum wage increase to ₦70,000.
However, he emphasized that an ambassador’s base pay represents only a portion of their total compensation. Diplomats serving abroad receive several allowances designed to cover the high cost of living, hardship conditions, and official representation expenses.
Overall, Nigerian ambassadors posted overseas typically earn ₦2 million to ₦5 million monthly in total take-home pay ($1,212–$3,030), depending on the economic conditions of their host country.
