IATA Data Reveals Top 10 International Destinations Nigerians Travel To

According to IATA data, the top international destinations Nigerians are flying to highlight the country’s strong global air connectivity across business, education, and tourism sectors.
International travel continues to serve as a vital bridge between Nigeria and the rest of the world, enabling millions of passengers to connect for trade, studies, family visits, and leisure.

Nigeria’s international aviation network is anchored by five major airports — Murtala Muhammed International Airport (Lagos), Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (Abuja), Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport, Port Harcourt International Airport, and Akanu Ibiam International Airport (Enugu). Among these, Lagos remains the busiest hub, followed by Abuja and Port Harcourt, handling the majority of outbound passenger traffic.

Based on IATA’s 2023 origin-destination data from The Value of Air Transport to Nigeria report, international flights accounted for 23% of Nigeria’s total departures, translating to 2.1 million outbound passengers. Europe dominated the travel landscape with 780,700 passengers (38%), followed by Africa (485,400 or 23%) and North America (373,000 or 18%).

Nigerian international flights made up 0.1% of global traffic and 2.9% of regional traffic, reflecting a modest decline of 7.2% over the past decade.

Further supporting data from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and Nairametrics show that in 2024, Lagos’s Murtala Muhammed International Airport managed 4.3 million international passengers, 150 million kilograms of cargo, and 40,250 aircraft movements. Abuja averaged 2,871 international passengers daily with 19 flights per day, while Port Harcourt recorded 111,846 passengers and 1,638 aircraft movements within the same period.

This data underscores Nigeria’s expanding role in international aviation, with Lagos and Abuja emerging as key gateways linking Africa’s largest economy to the rest of the world.
