INEC Confirms 2.8 Million Registered Voters for Anambra Governorship Election

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that 2,803,000 registered voters are expected to participate in the November 8, 2025 Anambra State Governorship Election.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Anambra, Queen Agwu, disclosed this on Tuesday during a strategy dialogue with the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room in Abuja, organized by the Policy and Legal Advocacy Centre (PLAC).

Agwu revealed that 140,907 newly registered voters will collect their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) before the end of the week. She also confirmed that 978 backup Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) devices have been prepared for deployment across 5,720 polling units in the state.

“All ballot papers and result sheets are polling-unit specific. Materials assigned to one unit cannot be used in another,” Agwu emphasized.

Security and Logistics Ready

The REC assured that all BVAS machines are fully charged and secured, with sensitive materials stored safely under strict documentation and supervision at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

“Some materials are already in our custody. My store officer locked the storage, and I locked it again with my key. It can’t be accessed unless you pull down the building,” Agwu stated confidently.

She added that security personnel across the three senatorial districts have been trained ahead of the poll, with 16 political parties cleared to contest the governorship election.

“No one has ever influenced me to favor any candidate. I remain neutral and committed to credible elections,” she affirmed.

Police Assure Voter Safety

Representing the Anambra Commissioner of Police, Assistant Commissioner Ekulu Remijius assured the public of adequate security before, during, and after the election.

“We’ve conducted top-notch simulations. Security operatives will be deployed across the state, and only accredited individuals will be allowed to move on election eve,” he said.

Remijius added that the police would conduct a “show of force” the night before the election, targeting known hotspots and securing boundary communities to prevent infiltration.

Civil Society Calls for Credibility

The Convener of the Situation Room, Mr. Y.Z. Ya’u, said the dialogue allowed civil society organizations to assess INEC’s readiness, stressing that credible elections remain vital to Nigeria’s democratic stability.

Election Seen as Test for INEC Technology

The upcoming Anambra governorship election is expected to be a major test of INEC’s technological reforms, particularly the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Result Viewing Portal (IReV).

Following mixed feedback from the 2023 general elections, the poll will serve as a benchmark for INEC’s ongoing efforts to ensure transparency and voter confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process.
