President Trump Moves to Suspend Migration from ‘Third World Countries’ After Deadly DC Shooting

US President Donald Trump on Thursday announced plans to halt migration from all so-called “Third World countries”, escalating his administration’s hardline immigration stance following a deadly shooting in Washington, D.C., that left one National Guard soldier dead and another critically injured.

The decision came just hours after authorities revealed that Sarah Beckstrom, a 20-year-old National Guard member deployed to the capital under Trump’s anti-crime initiative, had died from gunshot wounds sustained in what officials described as an “ambush-style” attack.

The suspected attacker, 29-year-old Afghan national Rahmanullah Lakanwal, is the subject of an FBI-led international terrorism investigation. New information indicates he previously served alongside US forces in Afghanistan.

The incident — taking place just blocks from the White House — has heightened tensions around three politically explosive issues: Trump’s domestic military deployments, the future of US immigration policy, and the unresolved consequences of America’s 20-year war in Afghanistan.

Trump Threatens to Reverse Biden-Era Admissions

In a fiery social media post, Trump declared:

“I will permanently pause migration from all Third World Countries to allow the U.S. system to fully recover.”

He further threatened to reverse “millions” of immigration admissions approved under the Biden administration and pledged to remove anyone he deems “not a net asset to the United States.”

During a Thanksgiving video call with US troops, Trump described the attack as a “terrorist act” and linked it to his controversial decision to deploy thousands of Guard members to crime-plagued cities.

USCIS Ordered to Review Green Cards

USCIS Director Joseph Edlow said he had ordered a “full-scale, rigorous reexamination” of every Green Card belonging to immigrants from countries considered security risks.

The agency later referenced a list of 19 countries subject to Trump’s earlier travel restrictions — including Afghanistan, Iran, Haiti, Cuba, and Myanmar.

The administration has already halted the processing of new immigration applications from Afghanistan.

Details of the Attack

The second Guardsman wounded in the shooting, 24-year-old Andrew Wolfe, remains in critical condition.

DC’s US Attorney, Jeanine Pirro, said Lakanwal drove across the country from Washington state before opening fire with a .357 Smith & Wesson revolver on a patrol team near the White House.

Lakanwal faces multiple counts of assault with intent to kill — charges that will be upgraded to first-degree murder following Beckstrom’s death. Authorities have not established a motive.

CIA Confirms Shooter Was Part of US-Backed Afghan Force

CIA Director John Ratcliffe confirmed that the suspect once belonged to a CIA-supported Afghan partner unit fighting the Taliban and had been relocated to the United States under an evacuation program for agency-affiliated personnel.

Top officials from the CIA, FBI and DHS insisted Lakanwal entered the US due to what they described as “lax asylum vetting” after the chaotic 2021 withdrawal from Afghanistan — though records show he was granted asylum in April 2025, under Trump’s administration.

AfghanEvac, an advocacy group involved in resettling Afghan allies, condemned attempts to politicize the tragedy, arguing that evacuees undergo “some of the most extensive security screening of any migrant group.”

More Troops Deployed to Washington

In response to the attack, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered the deployment of an additional 500 troops to Washington, raising the total to 2,500 National Guard members in the capital.

Trump has deployed Guard troops to several Democrat-led cities — including Los Angeles and Memphis — sparking lawsuits and widespread accusations of federal overreach.
