Shake Up At Apple As AI Chief Steps Down, Former Google Engineer Takes Over Leadership

Apple has announced the impending exit of its Senior Vice President for Machine Learning and AI Strategy, John Giannandrea, marking a major leadership shift at a time when the tech giant faces increasing pressure to keep pace in the global AI race.

Giannandrea, who joined Apple in 2018 after a long stint at Google, is set to retire early next year. Apple confirmed he will remain as an adviser during the transition, according to a statement released on Monday.

Apple CEO Tim Cook thanked the outgoing executive, noting his significant contributions to the company’s artificial intelligence development.

“We are thankful for the role John played in building and advancing our AI work,” Cook said.

Amar Subramanya Takes Over Apple’s AI Strategy

Replacing Giannandrea is Amar Subramanya, an industry veteran with deep experience at both Google and Microsoft. Subramanya recently served as Corporate Vice President of AI at Microsoft and previously spent 16 years at Google, where he oversaw engineering for the Gemini digital assistant.

Apple says Subramanya will lead “critical areas” of its AI strategy, including AI foundation models and machine learning, and play a key role in developing future Apple Intelligence features.

Cook highlighted Subramanya’s extensive track record of integrating AI into consumer products, calling his expertise “important to Apple’s ongoing innovation.”

Pressure Mounts as Rivals Accelerate AI Innovations

Giannandrea’s departure comes at a challenging period for Apple, which has struggled to convince investors and users that it remains competitive in the fast-moving AI space.

While competitors including Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI continue to release advanced AI models and introduce new features at a rapid pace, Apple recently delayed the launch of its upgraded Siri and postponed several AI-driven product improvements.

Apple maintains that AI remains central to its long-term strategy. The company says its next-generation Apple Intelligence features and a more personalised Siri experience will debut in 2026.

Apple Positions for a Stronger AI Future

Subramanya will report to Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Software Engineering, who has been increasingly visible in steering the company’s AI initiatives.

Cook emphasised Federighi’s leadership role, adding:

“Craig has been instrumental in driving our AI efforts, including overseeing our work to bring a more personalized Siri to users next year.”

Despite analyst concerns, Apple insists its upcoming devices, custom silicon chips, and expanded AI roadmap will firmly position the company for future innovation.
