Teenager Becomes ‘Vice President for a Day,’ Champions Girl-Child Education in Nigeria

A Nigerian teenager, Joy Ogah, has captured national attention after symbolically taking over the office of Vice President Kashim Shettima to promote girl-child education in Nigeria and advocate for equal learning opportunities for all children.

The symbolic event took place during a meeting with PLAN International, a global organization focused on children’s rights and equality for girls. The session was led by Helen Mfonobong Idiong, PLAN International’s Director of Programme, Quality, and Innovation, according to a statement from the Office of the Vice President.

Joy Ogah Advocates for Inclusive and Safe Learning Environments

Speaking from the Vice President’s chair, Joy Ogah addressed Nigeria’s growing education crisis. She highlighted that more than 10.5 million Nigerian children are currently out of school, with girls representing over 60 percent of that figure.

“We must invest in education that is safe and inclusive for every child in Nigeria,” Ogah said. “Every girl deserves a classroom, a choice, and dignity. When girls are protected, peace becomes possible. I may be Vice President for a day, but the struggles I represent cannot end in a day.”

She further called for government action to:

  • Provide free sanitary products in schools,
  • Ensure clean water and sanitation facilities, and
  • Support nutrition and health programs for young girls.

Ogah’s advocacy reflects the urgent need to empower girls through education and eliminate barriers that prevent them from thriving in school and society.

Government Reaffirms Commitment to Girl-Child Education

Responding to her remarks, Vice President Kashim Shettima reaffirmed the Tinubu administration’s commitment to advancing education for girls in Nigeria. He promised continued collaboration with PLAN International and other partners dedicated to improving education and gender equality.

A Symbol of Hope for Nigerian Girls

Observers say Joy Ogah’s “Vice President for a Day” experience symbolizes a growing movement for inclusive education and equal opportunities for girls across Nigeria. Her bold advocacy continues to inspire conversations about youth leadership, gender equality, and the future of education in the country.

By speaking out for millions of out-of-school girls, Ogah has become a voice of hope — reminding the nation that investing in girl-child education is key to building a more equitable and prosperous Nigeria.
