We present our picks for the top categories at the Headies. Who deserves to win and who will be robbed? Let us guide you
YEAR IN REVIEW: JULY 2014 – JUNE 2015)
BEST RECORDING OF THE YEAR
A non-voting category for the best single recording by an artiste or group in the year under review.
- Ojuelegba – Wizkid
- Eyo – Asa
- Wish Me Well – Timi Dakolo
- Bez – There’s A Fire
- Cobhams – Do the right Thing
Who should win: Bez’s lengthy mix of Afrobeats and Jazz was one of the year’s genuine highlights. Demanding to be consumed live, the swirling blend of instruments that takes over from the fourth minute alone is worth the price of admission.
Who will win: The Headies loves to reward superstars, especially entitled ones who see their winning as the only reason to show up. Wizkid may win but he’d only be robbing Bez.
- PRODUCER OF THE YEAR
An individual responsible for producing the most acclaimed song or album in the year under review.
- Don Jazzy – Godwin (Korede Bello)
- Mastakraft – Wiser (Flavour)
- Young John – Bobo (Olamide)
- Shizzi – Fans Mi (DavidO)
- Legendury Beatz – Ojuelegba
- Cobhams – There’s A Fire (Bez)
Who should win: Even Don Jazzy would be the first to turn down another Headies trophy for producing music. He’s won enough of them. Masterkraft does fine work but hasn’t been outstanding the year under review. Same with Shizzi. Cobhams work on There’s a fire is impressive enough to grab him the trophy on any particular day but the magic of Wizkid’s Ojuelegba song is the production by Legendury Beatz. The siblings should pick this one.
Who will win: It has been a wonderful year for Olamide’s YBNL and Young John’s name on a track has brought the most joy to partygoers this year. He may just win this based on those sentiments.
- BEST MUSIC VIDEO
A voting category for the best conceptualist, best directed and most exciting video in the year under review.
This award goes to the video director.
- Jamb Question (Simi) – Mex
- Crazy (Seyi Shay) – Meji Alabi
- The Sound (DavidO Feat. Uhuru & Dj Buckz) – Sesan
- Katapot (Reekado Banks) – UnLimited LA
- Baby Jollof (Solid Star Feat. Tiwa Savage) – Clarence Peters
Who should/will win: Baby Jollof and Katapot have no business on this list. Crazy is fine but doesn’t particularly stand out. The battle should be between the Sesan directed The Sound and Jamb question by Mex. Simi’s colourful affair should emerge tops in a world that has justice.
NEXT RATED
This category is a voting category for the most promising upcoming act in the year under review.
- Reekado Banks
- Kiss Daniel
- Cynthia Morgan
- Korede Bello
- Lil’ Kesh
Who should win: With a mouth-watering brand new car attached, it is not surprising that this is the Headies’ most competitive prize. All of the nominees bring to the table, bags of prime material but this should be the category Kiss Daniel is rewarded for his double punch of Woju and Laye. Both Mavins will cancel each other out and Cynthia Morgan may prove too divisive to win.
Who will win: if anyone can steal Daniel’s thunder, it will be Lil Kesh the YBNL filthy motor mouth who melts heart with his flow. Still this is Daniel’s prize to lose.
ALBUM OF THE YEAR
A voting category for the best album (solo or group) in year under review, that meets judges requirements of excellence (Song writing, production, rendition and promotion) and acceptability (Sales and popularity).
- Rich n Famous – Praiz
- King of Queens – Yemi Alade
- Street OT – Olamide
- Chairman – M.I.
- A.Y.O. – Wizkid
- Double Trouble – P Square
Who should win: The nominees here are not exactly making us jump with joy. Yemi Alade’s King of Queens is tepid at best, so is Street OT, Olamide’s wildly undisciplined mixtape masquerading as an album. Wizkid’s A.Y.O is frankly subpar and the less said about P Square’s Double Trouble, the better. The real gems here are Chairman and Rich n Famous. Either of them would be befitting winners but we would like to see the underdog in this case, Praiz triumph for his impressive double disc.
Who will win: MI’s Chairman. Based on impact and general acceptability.
ARTISTE OF THE YEAR
Most critically and commercially adjudged artiste in the year under review. Overall most successful artiste for the year under review.
- Olamide
- Davido
- Wizkid
- Yemi Alade
- P-Square
Who should/win: With due respect to every other person on the list, but only one person would make a credible winner here. And his name is Olamide.
SONG OF THE YEAR
A voting category for the most popular song in the year under review.
- Ojuelegba – Wizkid
- Godwin – Korede Bello
- Kiss Daniel – Woju
- Olamide – Bobo
Who should win: This one is quite competitive as all the nominees are credible winners. All were major sing alongs the year under review and we would love to see Kiss Daniel rewarded here.
Who will win: Wizkid’s Ojuelegba was remixed by Skepta and Drake and made Alicia Keys happy. Safe to say this one is already decided.
