Perhaps Nigeria is returning to the dark days of political witch-hunt if we are to clearly examine the recent invitation by the Nigerian anti crime agency EFCC of the wife of the senate president Bukola Saraki. SayNigeria.Com confirmed from the private secretary to Mrs Saraki that there was an invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. Mr Akeem Olagoke made it clear that Mrs Saraki as a law abiding citizen intends to honor the invitation and and assist the EFCC in whatever investigation being conducted. Human rights groups, lawyers and some women initiative organisations are however questioning the timing of this invitation which seems geared towards a political undertone considering the bad blood that has been generated regarding the leadership tussle in the National Assembly.
The emergence of Senator Bukola Saraki as Senate President and Hon Yakubu Dogara as Speaker of the House of Representative has emanated into an uneasy calm within the ruling APC government. There have been several attacks through various means on the character of the Senate President. In responding to the EFCC invitation of Mrs Saraki, one of the Senators of Like Minds reminded us that indirect tactics of intimidation was prevalent in Nigerian politics. He wondered why the invitation of Mrs Saraki would come at this time considering the fact that the matter under investigation was over 8 years ago during the tenure of her husband as governor of Kwara State.
He also highlighted the fact that the likes of former ministers Deziani Madueke, Ngozi Okonjo Iweala and Stella Oduah are still walking freely despite documentary evidence against them. A human right activist Mr Ajibola Onikoyi affirm his support to the fight against corruption but spoke vehemently against using government agencies as a political tool to drive home aspirations.
‘We should not return to the days where families of political adversaries will be targets of law enforcement agencies’ He however exonerated President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration from such intimidation tactics and suspects that some politicians with political undertone are gradually exerting their influence on EFCC to do their bidding.
The attention of the President must be brought to this new trend to enable the populace enjoy the much awaited change in peace and security without intimidation and infringement of fundamental human rights. Human Rights groups, Non Governmental Organisations and Women Initiative Forums have been visiting and contacting Mrs Saraki to lend their support mainly due to her effort in founding the Well Being Foundation Africa http://www.wbfafrica.org/ This foundation has not only being empowering African women, it has been successful in increasing investments in Midwives leading to reduction in infant mortality rate in Kwara State and beyond.
Besides increase in access to essential health services in Nigeria, Well Being Foundation also initiated Maternity Care Programs in Kwara State and highlighted the importance of personal health records as a tool in measurement and accountability of results in health. Quoting Mr Olagoke, ‘we patiently await the outcome of this unexpected invitation with caution as we thank friends and well wishers and urge all to remain calm’
